70% of US voters, including 54% of Republicans, support assault weapons ban in poll

A Politico/Morning Consult poll released today, August 8th, shows 70% of U.S. registered voters support an assault weapons ban.

The poll, conducted August 5-7,2019, among 1960 registered voters, was taken after the public had learned of the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, that killed 31 people and wounded dozens of others. 85% of Democrats supported the Assault Weapons ban, either strongly or somewhat, 54% of Republicans, and 65% of independents.

727 of the poll respondents identified as Democrats, or 37%. 627 identified as Republicans, or 32%, and 606 identified as independents,  or 31%.

Only 24% of US registered voters opposed the ban, including 38% of Republicans.
