New York State Has Largest Percentage With Health Insurance of Four Biggest States in U.S.

 

 

The Kaiser Family Foundation analysis of health insurance coverage for the United States for 2017 shows New York State has the largest percentage of its residents with health insurance coverage of the four largest states in the nation. Ninety-four percent of its residents had health insurance coverage in 2017, the latest data available. California was second with ninety-three  percent. Both New York and California accepted the Obamacare Medicaid expansion and in both of these states 26% of the population is now served by the Medicaid program.

Texas has 17% uninsured, and Florida has 13% uninsured. Both states chose not to accept the Obamacare Medicaid expansion. The percentage of the population in poverty in the four big states is comparable- ranging from 13.3% in California to 14.7% in Texas.

The top five states for health insurance coverage, and the worst five, are reflected in the tables below for perspective. Massachusetts tops the country with 97% insured, and four other states, all fairly small, have 96% coverage. Texas is the worst in the country, and Florida is in the worst five as well. Georgia, Oklahoma, and Alaska are the other three states with the lowest percentage of their residents insured.
